CHINA – to expand visa-free travel to more countries, seeking further exemptions

Mainland China announced the implementation of a new visa-free entry policy for more countries, as the world’s second-largest economy ramps up efforts to encourage more cross-border exchanges.

Since December 2023, citizens of five European countries (France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain) and Malaysia have been already allowed to enter China for up to 15 days without a visa. This is a trial program in effect for one year, which has been extended in January 2024 to Ireland and Switzerland.

Early January 2024, Thailand and China agreed to waive visa requirements for each other’s citizens starting on March 1. Under the arrangement, Chinese and Thai passport holders will be able to travel to the other’s country for up to 30 days, replacing the temporary visa scheme that was launched last September.

On January 25, China and Singapore similarly signed a mutual 30-day visa-free entry agreement, set to come into effect on February 9, the day before Chinese New Year.

Here is the recap of these new visa-free policies:

Beyond these new visa-free schemes, the Chinese Government is further encouraging inbound tourism by enhancing tourism infrastructures, investing in technology, travel guides and e-payment systems.

China now enjoys comprehensive mutual visa exemption with 23 countries and Chinese authorities are seeking foreign investment to boost the economy, and more businesspeople coming for trade fairs and meetings.
